The L1-chip or lipid capture chip is a sensor chip which is able to capture intact vesicles. In this way membrane proteins and interactions with different membranes can be studied.

Properties of nonfused liposomes immobilized on an L1 Biacore chip and their permeabilization by a eukaryotic pore-forming toxin. The L1 chip is used intensively for protein-membrane interaction studies in Biacore surface plasmon resonance systems. The exact form of captured lipid membranes on the chip is, however, not precisely known. Evidence exists that the vesicles both remain intact after the binding to the chip and fuse to form a large single-bilayer membrane. In this study shows the capture of intact liposomes on the L1 chips.

Surface plasmon resonance characterization of drug/liposome interactions. In this publication, experimental protocols and probed test conditions were developed which were required to study drugs interacting with liposome surfaces. Liposome capture on hydrophobic alkane surfaces (L1 chip) was reproducible and stable under variable conditions of pH, temperature, lipid content, cholesterol content, and buffer dimethylsulfoxide concentration.

Quality assessment of SPR sensor chips; case study on L1 chips. Surface quality of the Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) chips is a major limiting issue in most SPR analyses, even more for supported lipid membranes experiments, where both the organization of the lipid matrix and the subsequent incorporation of the target molecule depend on the surface quality. A novel quantitative method to characterize the quality of SPR sensors chips is described for L1 chips subject to formation of lipid films, injection of membrane disrupting compounds, followed by appropriate regeneration procedures.
